PRIME SET TO HAVE BUSY JULY!!!
01/07/25
As we head into the final month of the 2024/25 Season I am pleased with our results. 41 winners at a winning strike race of 22.5% is far better than the industry average.
Currently we have 33 horses in our team that have raced with 27 of these being winners.
These winners include Stakes or Metropolitan winners in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.
Our runners coming up include:
- Miss Lyra in the Tasmanian Sires Produce Stakes in Hobart July 6
- Flattered and The Devil In Her at Sandown July 8
- Seoee and Shadhavar at Caulfield July 12
- The Cunning Fox in the Grand National Hurdle at Sandown August 3
The Cunning Fox maintained his perfect record over the jumps winning the time honoured Australian Hurdle at Sandown. In the end he was dominant but had to dig deep to get the job done.
He is most likely to have his next race over the obstacles in the Grand National Hurdle on 3 August at Sandown. Patrick and Michelle will give him one or two runs on the flat to ready him for the important race.
He is a very exciting horse.
Congratulations to Patrick and Michelle Payne for the great job they have done with ‘The Fox’. Tom Ryan has a great affiliation with the horse and gave him a perfect ride.
Our 2yo’s have been good, running in fifteen races for five wins, two second and two third placings.
Zany Girl has won three races including the Listed Elwick Stakes.
Cavalry Girl has a great win at Flemington to her credit.
Miss Lyra was most impressive winning her maiden at only her second start.
The placings included the Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes, Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Geelong Diamond, all important races.

THE PRIME STORY
In 1997 after a 20 year career in the Australian Army Major Joe O’Neill was looking to a future in cricket management. Joe, then had a chance meeting with Bill Mitchell early in that year and Prime Thoroughbreds was born.
All the Prime Thoroughbreds horses were initially trained by Bill.
When Bill retired from training in 2005, Joe split the horses and today has his horses trained by Kris Lees and John Thompson in NSW, Patrick and Michelle Payne and Tom Dabernig in Victoria Adam Trinder and Stuart Gandy in Tasmania.
1084 wins and over $32,500,000 in prizemoney later things are going strong!!! Prime Thoroughbreds horses have won races at most of the major meetings in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, SA and Tasmania.
One of Joe’s biggest assets has been his ability to identify sires early in their careers with Rubisaki, Fituese, Seonee, Under Command, Xtremetime, Miss Divine Em, Zizzis, Unchain My Heart, Casa De Lago, Eramor, Rumeron, Sandasta, Embeller, Admiral’s Cup, Albert’s Image, Birdies Galore, Flattered and Cavalry Girl all being by first season sires.
Once again in the 2022/23 Season Joe got first season sire Brave Smash right with his two Brave Smash 2yo’s Power Of The Brave and La Boqueria both winning as 2yo’s. Kris Lees did a great job with these two young horses.
In the 2023/24 season he nailed it with Flattered, a 2yo filly by First Season Sire Yes Yes Yes, running second in the Listed MRC Merson Cooper Stakes, second in the Listed TTC Gold Sovereign Stakes, second in the Listed SAJC Breeders Stakes and 4th in the Group 3 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes. Flattered is Yes Yes Yes’s best filly.
In the 2024/25 season he stepped out the exciting filly Cavalry Girl by First Season Sire Bivouac. Cavalry Girl is Bivouac’s second highest earning filly in Australia and only Melbourne or Sydney winning filly.
He is excited with the first season sire Lucky Vega filly Miss Lyra due to make her debut on 6 June in Hobart. She recently was very impressive winning a barrier trial.
At this year’s yearling sales Joe was taken by the progeny of Tiger Of Malay and purchased a stunning filly by him for $40,000. She will be trained by Stuart Gandy in Hobart.
Joe is proud to be a part of a sport that has given so much entertainment and pleasure to Australians for over 200 years.

Come join us in the thrill of racing this exceptional filly by the Champion young sire Capitalist.
