THE PRIME STORY

In 1997 after a 20 year career in the Australian Army Major Joe O’Neill was looking to a future in cricket management.  Joe, then had a chance meeting with Bill Mitchell early in that year and Prime Thoroughbreds was born.

All the Prime Thoroughbreds horses were initially trained by Bill.

When Bill retired from training in 2005, Joe split the horses and today has his horses trained by Kris Lees and John Thompson in NSW, Patrick Payne and Tom Dabernig in Victoria and Adam Trinder in Tasmania.

1013 wins and over $30,000,000 in prizemoney later things are going strong!!!  Prime Thoroughbreds horses have won races at most of the major meetings in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, SA and Tasmania.

One of Joe’s biggest assets has been his ability to identify sires early in their careers with Rubisaki, Fituese, Seonee, Under Command, Xtremetime, Miss Divine Em, Zizzis, Unchain My Heart, Casa De Lago, Eramor, Rumeron, Sandasta, Embeller, Admiral’s Cup, Albert’s Image, Birdies Galore and Flattered all being by first season sires.

In the 2022/23 Season Joe got first season sire Brave Smash right with his two Brave Smash 2yo’s Power Of The Brave and La Boqueria both winning twice.  Kris Lees has done a great job with these two young horses.

This season he nailed it with Flattered, a 2yo filly by First Season Sire Yes Yes Yes, running second in the Listed MRC Merson Cooper Stakes, second in the Listed TTC Gold Sovereign Stakes, second in the Listed SAJC Breeders Stakes and 4th in the Group 3 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes.

Joe is proud to be a part of a sport that has given so much entertainment and pleasure to Australians for over 200 years.

Come join us in the thrill of racing this exceptional colt, sired by the Champion I Am Invincible and out of the esteemed Sebring mare, Loretta.

This colt boasts an exhilarating and prestigious pedigree, hailing from the immediate family of Redoutes Choice and Al Maher. Notably, his second dam is a full sister to LUCKY RAQUIE and a three-quarter sister to MANHATTAN RAIN, RUBICK, and ECHOES OF HEAVEN.

WHY ARE SO MANY OF OUR SYNDICATIONS AMONGST THE VERY BEST HORSES BY THEIR SIRES?

Incredibly, so many of the horses we have syndicated have gone on to amongst the very best progeny of their sires.

I have listed some of these with the number of races they won and prizemoney earned.  Also, I have listed the number of horses to have raced by their sire.  For example, Rubisaki’s sire Rubick has had 416 of his progeny race with Rubisaki being his highest earning filly or mare.

Look at these extraordinary results. These horses were purchased for just $850,000 as weanlings or yearlings for an average purchase price of just $65,385. Compare this with the average purchase price at this year’s major sales was about $300,000.

Why Choose Prime?

Prime Thoroughbreds is a well-established syndication company with a strong record of purchasing competitive and successful thoroughbreds. Our statistics back up our successful process for selecting and managing our thoroughbreds for over twenty five years.

In many ways Prime Thoroughbreds is a boutique operation only syndicating about 15 horses per year. This allows us to be very selective about which yearlings we offer to our owners.

Joe O’Neill works very closely with Bill and James Mitchell of Mitchell Bloodstock as well as our highly regarded vets Dr Greg Nash and Dr Tim Roberts.

Joe O’Neill is very proud of the relationships he has built up with William Inglis and Magic Millions as well as with some of our very best breeders.
