Patrick Payne to Train

I’m thrilled to have secured this colt by the very good sire Reliable Man(GB) out of the Foreplay mare Romantically, the dam of the multiple stake’s winner Romancer. Romancer was also Group placed on four occasions and Listed placed a further five times.

I was very impressed with Reliable Man when I inspected him at Westbury Stud in 2019.  He is a stunning horse, very athletic with a real presence about him.  I decided to try and find one I liked with Bill Mitchell recommending I inspect a colt at the Magic Millions National Sale in 2020.  I loved the horse and purchased him.  He races as The Cunning Fox and has won $318,150 on the track with three wins from just 12 starts.  Two of these wins were in the Bendigo Jockey Club St Leger Trial and at Flemington where he won over 2000m at only his third start.

He has also been placed three times with two of these placings in the MRC Listed Galilee Final and time honored, VRC St Leger Stakes at Flemington.

Patrick Payne has a good record with the progeny of Reliable Man with all four-winning including Marcolt which won and Sandown recently and the Caulfield winner Cru Classe.

This colt will suit Patrick.  He is a great trainer of middle-distance horses with the two I purchased him being The Nephew and The Cunning Fox doing a great job for us.

In total I have purchased Patrick 13 colts with 10 of these winning.  The average purchase price of these horses is $67,300 with them winning a combined 40 races and $2,839,580 in prizemoney.

The Cunning Fox, The Nephew, Sizzling Sonata, Capistan, Paululu and Another Nephew are still in our racing team so we should see more wins in the future.

I was very keen on the progeny of Foreplay when he went to stud.  He was a beautifully bred horse by Champion sire Danehill and did a good job with limited opportunities.  I syndicated the following horses by Foreplay; Faith’n’Courage, Sea Tryst, Believe’n’Receive, Tigerish and Ohmygod.  These were handy gallopers winning 40 races and $688,375 in prizemoney.  None were stakes winners although Believe’n’Achieve was the most winning 3yo in Australia in her year and placed 4th in the Group 1 VRC Myer Classic.

This colt looks a lot like Foreplay who was a stunning looking sire.  As a broodmare sire Foreplay has done a good job, again with limited opportunities with the very good sprinter Victorem the winner of eight races and $1,366,525 in stakes money being out of one of his daughters.  In his final race he finished 9th in the Group 1 Stradbroke beaten just 2.65 lengths.

Romantically didn’t race but as a broodmare she has done a good job with Romancer being her only foal to race.  He was a very good racehorse winning almost $700,000 in Australia and NZ.

She has been a disaster at stud for her owners failing to get into foal on four occasions and having just one other foal sold through the ring which hasn’t raced and sadly, had to be put down after showing very good potential in two barrier trials at Warwick Farm.

Romantically comes from a serious running family with her being a ½ sister to the outstanding Group 1 performer Sirmione. Sermione won the Group 1 VRC MacKinnon Stakes, Group 1 VRC Australian Cup and Group 3 QTC Grand Prix Stakes as well as being placed 2nd in the Group 1 VRC Australian Cup and MRC St George Stakes as well as being 3rd in the Group 1 QTC Queensland Derby, Group 1 VRC MacKinnon Stakes, Group 1 STC BMW and the MRC Group 1 CF Orr Stakes.

The 2nd and 3rd dams are stakes horses and we have some great ‘Black type’ performers across the family.

This colt has a real touch of class and could develop in time into a Classic 3yo with races like the Caulfield Guineas on his radar.  He is a ripper.
