Deep Field filly out of Romantic Era (NZ) – John Thompson to train

5% shares for $8,500
10% shares for $17,000

Sometimes when I attend a yearling sale something catches my eye with a yearling.  It is hard to describe but there is something special about the colt or filly.  This was the case with this filly.  I went back and inspected her three times.  She is incredibly athletic and very feminine.  She is a sweet filly but has a real presence about her.

The filly is by Deep Field, a sire I have a great affinity with.  I love Deep Field as a sire.  He has done an exceptional job with his oldest progeny being 6yo.  Sadly, Deep Field has become infertile, and this filly is one out of his last decent crops.  There are only 14 foals on the ground born in 2022.

I purchased Fituese in his first crop and she did a remarkable job winning seven races. This is the most wins of any of Deep Field’s daughters.  On top of that she was named Joint NSW

BOBS Horse Of The Year in the 2019/20 Racing Season.  I got a great thrill out of this being a Victorian based syndicator.

She is scheduled to be sold at this year’s Magic Millions National sale where we would expect her to fetch about $750,000 as a breeding proposition. Fituese won $549,515 on the track and was purchased for just $55,000.

We have had just one other of Deep Field’s progeny to race with Tillotson winning three including a very good win at Canterbury and a class record win at Moonee Valley.

Deep Field is currently 8th on the Australian General Sires List for Winners but more important is that he sits in equal 2nd place for Stakes Wins behind I Am Invincible and equal with Snitzel, the two powerhouse sires in Australia.

This filly is out of the unraced mare Romantic Era (NZ) by Nadeem, a Group 1 winning son of Redoute’s Choice.  This is her first foal which I like.  She is a ½ sister to the Group 2 winner, the Justice League and the Group 2 and Group 3 placed Viva La Difference.

Romantic Era’s dam is by Peintre Celebre (USA), a great broodmare sire with his daughters having 152 stakes horses to their credit.  The best known of these in Australia are the Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, Red Cadeaux, Vadamos, Gathering, Precious Gem, Rock Classic and the Champion filly Nechita.

The 3rd dam, Glittering Girl is by the great sire Marscay and has thrown the stakes winner Sergeant Blast.

Down the page there are so many good horses in the family including the 4th dam Jewel In The Crown, Christmas Tree, Wild Queen, Kementari, So Gorgeous and the list goes on.

The filly was reared at Cornerstone Stud in South Australia, a farm we have had great success buying from.  Good horses I have purchased from Cornerstone include Pitt Street, Hussy’s glow and Mr Cashman.

Cornerstone Stud is a very high-class property evolving from Lindsay Park which was established by Colin Hayes.

From the 70’s through to the 90’s Lindsay Park was home to some of Australia’s best credentialed stallions including Without Fear, Godswalk, Habituate, Arch Sculptor, Scenic, Bluebird, Military Plume and Jeune.

Lindsay Park has also had a major role in shaping Australia’s top broodmare sires such as At Talaq and Rory’s Jester. The dams of racing heavyweights, Manikato and top sire General Nediym, were bred at Lindsay Park; while the dams of Golden Slipper winners, Ha Ha and Belle De Jour, and the Blue Diamond winner, Road to Success, were also trained at the Hayes family base.

Lindsay Park Stud has also led the field with innovations such as stallion syndication and the shuttle stallion concept with horses such as Godswalk, Bluebird and Scenic.

The return of David Hayes to Australia in 2005 coincided with a significant re-structure at Lindsay Park Stud which saw Sam Hayes, a third generation of the Hayes family take over the management of Lindsay Park Stud. Sam, the eldest son of David’s older brother Peter became a partner in Lindsay Park Stud and assumed the role of Managing Director.

In May 2011, Lindsay Park Stud re-named itself ‘Cornerstone Stud’. The first draft of yearlings sold under the new Cornerstone Stud banner in 2012 contained subsequent Group One South Australian Derby winner Kushadasi. He became yet another top level winner to have been born and raised at the famous Barossa Valley property.
