John Thompson to Train
I love buying into families I have a close association with. Unfortunately, most of the time when I inspect yearlings that are closely related to our good horses, they fail to reach the standard I require, and I don’t buy them. It should be noted, we have nearly always been correct when we decide not to buy full or half relations to our good horses. A good example is Seonee who I loved as a yearling. She was super athletic, but I didn’t like the next two foals from the mare and I made a good decision not to buy them.
On the other hand, when we have purchased full or half relations to our horses, we generally have got a good result. A good example was purchasing Zizzis and Rubisaki after Charlie Goggin gave us a very positive report for Husson’s Kiss.
Another example was Too Many Reds family which we had terrific success with.
When I inspected this Hellbent colt out of Ambar I was blown away. He was simply outstanding and as good a colt as I have inspected. His ½ sister Emmadella is also a magnificent looking thoroughbred. She is a very good racehorse with her win at Randwick on 28 December being outstanding. I’ll be very surprised if she doesn’t win a big race. She has improved with each preparation and now has four wins to her credit and $232,425 in prizemoney from just 13 starts with four placings as well.
Hellbent is a very exciting sire. He was 4th on the Australian First Season Sire Premiership in 2021/22 Season, 2nd on the Second Season List in 2022/23 and Champion Third Season Sire in Australia in the 2023/24 Season. He is currently 18th on the Australian General Sire’s List up from 44th last Season.
Ambar is by Snitzel. She is a very well-bred mare. Only two of her foals were deemed good enough to go to sale. Emmadella and this colt. I made the right call buying Emmadella as a weanling and I am extremely excited with this colt.
The cross with Hellbent over Snitzel mares has been very effective producing nine winners from 12 to race with two of the other runners being placed 2nd from just two starts each. This includes Winchman which ran in the rich Magic Millions Maiden on 5 January.
The best is the outstanding 3yo Fully Lit with two wins from four starts and a second and $1,350,000 in prizemoney including a win in the $2,000,000 Inglis Millenium with the second placing coming in the Black Opal Stakes.
Snitzel is an outstanding broodmare sire sitting in third place on the Australian Broodmare Sire List behind Fastnet Rock and More Than Ready. His daughters have also crossed well with I Am Invincible, Hellbent’s sire as well as Shalaa who is by I Am Invincible’s sire Invincible Spirit.
This colt goes to John Thompson who has done a great job with Emmadella. I have included information on John’s results for Prime Thoroughbreds. They are outstanding.
