Kris Lees to Train
At this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale I’ve had about 40 yearlings vetted. This is an expensive exercise but necessary to ensure our owners buy into horses that give them the best chance of getting a runner. It is a tough sale with yearling after yearling we had selected going for, in some cases ridiculous prices.
Since x-rays became available we have had just two yearlings not get to the races from about 180 purchased. In total since we started in 1997 we have 349 of 364 yearlings get to the races. These are exceptional figures but give our owners confidence they are buying into will get to the track.
I rated this filly as one of the best in the sale and was determined to get her. She is a natural athlete. This filly passed all our checks. She is correct and vetted out without any issues. I expected her to fetch about $300,000 and was pleasantly surprised when we secured her for $275,000 incl GST. This filly could well prove to be one of the best buys in the sale. If she was to gain black type she would be worth a small fortune.
Russian Revolution has done a great job since going to stud. He was an outstanding racehorse winning the ATC Group 1 Galaxy Stakes. He also won twice as a 2yo.
He was Australia’s Leading First Season Sire in the 2021/22 Season and is currently leading the Second Season Sire’s List.
Russian Revolution is by Australia’s Champion Sire Snitzel, himself a son of Redoute’s Choice. If any sire was going to make it from his cohort it was him.
Nurse Kitchen is by Champion Sire Savabeel who was by another Champion in the great Zabeel. Nurse Kitchen was a very good race mare winning on debut and then the Group 2 3yo Fillies classic at Moonee Valley at her only her third start.
She was an unlucky 2nd in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes. I like the fact she was only lightly raced having just 10 starts.
Nurse Kitchen comes from a family riddled with ‘Black Type’ performers. I love this filly and hope she develops into a classic 3yo with 1600m races like the 100 Guineas and Flight Stakes her goals.
Kris Lees will train the filly from his Newcastle base but has a Gold Coast base and has regularly conducted successful raids up north including winning the Mode Stakes and Magic Millions Stayers Cup for Prime Thoroughbreds. This gives him a lot of options.
